“Menu” Recon: Spice Road Table … Another Return Visit?

What have you done, Spice Road Table?!  What have you done?

I just announced to “The World” – via the WDW Main Street Podcast – that you had become one of my very-favorite Epcot table service venues!  Hah!  What bad timing, on my part!

What am I ranting about, folks?  Well, Spice Road has “tweaked” their menu … in a very bad way, in our opinion.

When Mrs. All in WDW and I last visited Morocco’s relatively brand-new waterside restaurant, we had a great lunch.  Take a look back at my last “recon”!

Mrs. All in WDW really enjoyed their Mix Grill Skewers.

At $12, they were a delicious bargain, as far as she was concerned.  Hey!  I was sad that I didn’t try them myself!

Me?  I went with Spice’s Tingis Sampler.  A combination of Lamb Slider, Harissa Chicken Roll, and Lamb Sausage, it was a $16 delight!  A terrific trio!

So, OK.  What’s my gripe?  Well, on our last visit to Epcot, we stopped in for some of those yummy skewers.  What did we find?  Disappointment.

You see, Spice Road Table has recently “re-furbed” their menu.  The sampler platters, both the Tingis and the Mogador (mussels, salted cod, and calamari), are gone!

If I were to want my slider, chicken roll, and sausage now, I’d have to buy them separately for a sum of $25!  Yikes!  From $16 to $25?

Good thing I went there for the Mix Grill Skewers, eh?  Nope.  Think again.

Look, I don’t know if the serving size is bigger or not … because we didn’t stay to find out.  Why?  Morocco has added rosemary-roasted potatoes to the dish, called it an entree as opposed to an appetizer, and re-priced the skewers at a whopping $28!  $28?  Wow!  It was $12!

You saw my post yesterday, my friends.  Rose & Crown Pub & Dining Room’s Bangers and Mash is a fantastic and delicious $16 lunch.

Given the choice between a midday visit to Rose & Crown or Spice Road Table, our choice in the future is, without question, going to be the United Kingdom’s table service.

Lunch at $16?  Yeah, that, I can see.  Lunch at nearly $30?  I’m sorry, Spice Road.  Not for us.

It’s all Doug’s fault!  I’m speaking of Doug Davis of the WDW Main Street Podcast, of course.

First, he enticed me into falling in love with the Rose & Crown’s Bangers and Mash.  Then, he got his partner, Dennis Conroy, and I all wrapped up in the delights served by Morocco’s Spice Road Table!

This, as yet, under-appreciated destination for sampling Mediterranean small plates opened earlier this year with ample outdoor …

When it comes to the food, I have to confess, I was a bit apprehensive of what Mrs. All in WDW and I were to find.  You see, my previous experiences with Moroccan fare – mainly at Epcot’s annual Food & Wine festival – always left me feeling that the flavors weren’t in my palate’s “happy zone”.

It was early in the day, and quite a bit chilly in Florida, so we started our experience with Café Espresso …

… and Café Au Lait.

We wanted a light bite for our early lunch, so we decided to order one small plate for each of us.  Following Dennis and Doug’s recommendations, I just had to have the Tingis Sampler.

This “little taste of everything” includes Moroccan Lamb Sausage – a North African Spicy Lamb Sausage served with Tomato, Red Onion, and Cilantro Salad.  I found this to be quite tasty.

It also presented a Harissa Chicken Roll with Spicy Ketchup.  I have to tell you one thing … that ketchup was phenomenal and went very well with the lamb sausage!

And, finally, the “star” of the plate was its Lamb Slider.  Served on Brioche with Cucumber Dill and Mint Tzatziki Sauce, it was just a tad overdone but very, very good.  The little bit of olive salad was a good accompaniment.

Saying that nothing on the Tingis Sampler interested her, Mrs. All in WDW went a different direction and chose the Mix Grill Skewers.  Beef and Chicken with Garlic and fresh Herbs graced the plate.  She loved, loved, loved it!

Folks, my words of advice are this … we approached our visit to Spice Road Table with hesitation.  We weren’t sure that the tastes were going to be “our type of thing”.

Fortunately, we listened to Doug and Dennis.  In fact, did you catch the show they did for All in WDW?  It was a special audio “Dining Recon” and can be found at this link.  Please go back and take a listen.

They inspired us to give Morocco’s new eatery a try.  Now, we’d add it to our list of WDW’s “not so” hidden gems.  Folks, we’ll be in The World with our son and his fiancee’ over the holidays, and I have to tell you, Spice Road Table is on our “hit list”!

“All roads lead to the spice road table!”?  Let it lead you there as well!

It’s World Showcase’s relatively new and eclectic tapas restaurant.  Located across the promenade from Morocco, it specializes in Mediterranean small plates.

With décor inspired by outdoor cafés from the Moroccan seaside, it’s a great place to sample Mediterranean flavors and fare, enjoy legendary hospitality, while watching Illuminations.

“Dining” Recon: Spice Road Table

The blog-o-sphere exploded a few weeks back when it was announced that a brand new restaurant, called Spice Road Table, is going to be built in Epcot on the shore of World Showcase Lagoon and in the Moroccan pavilion.

According to A.J. Wolfe’s Disney Food Blog, “The new restaurant will combine 120 outdoor terrace seats with 60 indoor seats to offer guests a new option for dining in … World Showcase (and another amazing view of Epcot’s Illuminations fireworks show).”

“The menu will include tapas, small plates, olive oils and ingredients, and great wines representing specific Mediterranean countries. Guests will be able to order several dishes from the same country or mix and match to enjoy several different flavors and influences,” according to A.J.’s sources.
