You know, I’ve never been a huge fan of pineapple juice. It’s just too sweet for me. I do like fresh pineapple, though. However, when it comes to my affection for Dole Whip, I have to blame that on Lou Mongello.
Yes, it was years of listening to Lou’s podcast – WDW Radio – that filled my head with Walt Disney World “wonders” – including the magnificence of Dole Whip Soft-Serve. In fact, Lou talked about it so much that I just HAD to try it. Well, just like you, I did, and I loved it!
But, a Dole Whip Float? Never had one. Never even considered it! Did I already tell you that pineapple juice is just too sweet for me? No, if I want my pineapple soft-serve smothered by something, I think I’ll stick with the “Food” & Garden Festival’s rum-soaked version. Yum! Having said that, the Pineapple Dole Whip Float is clearly the All in WDW Readers’ Favorite Dole Whip! Yay! I think.
Before I let you go …
… as I was doing some quick research for this poll, I happened across a very interesting tid-bit. All of this thought, voting, and writing about Dole Whip got me to thinking about pineapple ice cream. Well, truthfully, it got me to thinking about pineapple ice cream drowned in spiced rum, but I realized that the dilemma was – where would I find the ice cream? Oh, and not sherbet … ice cream!
I’m going to have to scour the freezer-case at the grocery store later (I haven’t even looked there yet), but, in the meantime, I ‘Googled’ pineapple ice cream and Dole Whip. Here are some highlights I found on Wikipedia:
Dole Whip is a soft serve frozen dessert available most notably at Disneyland at Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room and at Walt Disney World (at Aloha Isle in the Magic Kingdom and Captain Cook’s at the Polynesian Resort). Well, we knew that already, but it can also be found at the Dole plantation in Hawaii. That doesn’t help us if we’re not in Hawaii or not in “Walt’s Worlds”.
Don’t fret, though. There are also some third-party outlets where you can find Dole Whip. Namely, Wikipedia lists Lappert’s Ice Cream stores (in California and Nevada) and Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt (listed Internationally). I think Menchies is our best shot for an out-of-park dose of this particular morsel of Disney. If you want to track down the closest Menchie’s to your locale, hit this locator on their website. The closest one to me is 5 miles! I wonder if they serve their Dole Whip with spiced rum!
By the way, this also caught my eye … starting with the 2013 season, Dole Whip will be available at Six Flags Parks! What?! Uh, Six Flags Over Georgia is only 20 miles from our house! Wow! Between Menchie’s and Six Flags, I would have never guessed that Dole Whip “lived” that close to us!
I’ve had it in oklahoma (even said dole!) at peach wave, another frozen yogurt place. I’ve heard from a lot of people that they’ve found it at various frozen yogurt places. Mine tasted identical except for the lack of adventure land music in the background haha
Excellent! Thanks, Ros! Hey, everyone, if you’ve found Dole Whip somewhere other than where I listed, please let us know!
Menchi’s version definitely not as good. It’s pineapple frozen yogurt.
Awww, thanks for the feedback, Stephane. I guess I’m stuck with trying Six Flags. 😦
Comment from Reddit: Oh also, just because you hadn’t mentioned it. They sell dole whip at the poolside grill and Disney’s Vero Beach resort too 🙂
Comment from Reddit: They had them at the Kentucky State Fair every year. My husband (born and raised) was so excited to see them at MK on our honeymoon.. He always had to wait a year to get one. Now we live 40 minutes away and get one whenever we want at the Poly. 🙂
I’d be interested in trying a real cream-based, churned pineapple ice cream. I’m not a big fan of the soft-serve ‘frozen dessert’ stuff. That being said, I have tried the Dole Whip Float from Aloha Isle. I always had to share because it was too much and too sweet for me to eat the whole thing.
That’s what I’m afraid of, Andrew, that it would be way too sweet for me to eat.
That’s really cool news about Six Flags. I’m about 3 hours north of ATL. I’m might need to make a trip down if for nothing else but the Dole Whip.
The Dole Whip float is my favorite! And I’d love to see Disney keep around the spiced rum version.
We’re going to try to get to Six Flags at some point before it gets too hot. If we do, I’ll post an update. As for the spiced rum version, they better keep it around!! If they don’t, I might have to start making it at home!
