UNSUBSTANTIATED Rumor Reaction: WDW’s Monorail System!

Good Saturday, my friends!  Welcome to “Rumor Reaction”.  Today’s topic?  WDW’s monorail system, of course.  Oh, we’ve all seen the report, I’m sure.  Well, unless you’ve detached yourself from social media for the last few days, that is.

Spurred by the monorail’s recent open-doored journey across property to Epcot, one theme-park focused web site has posted a rumor that Disney is reviewing the future of WDW’s monorail system.

Why, you ask?  High maintenance and upgrade costs, evidently.  Hey!  Who here hasn’t complained about the monorail’s intermittent service issues?  It is old equipment, after all.

If you haven’t seen it, here’s the link to a report out of WPLG Local 10 (Miami) News.  In it, Disney categorically refutes the rumor while claiming “there are no plans to discontinue the system”.

On the other hand, the original blog post maintains that they’ve been hearing quiet whispers of the monorail’s demise.

In addition, allegedly, it is reported that one source (not specified as a Disney source, by the way) contends that age, reliability, downtime, and maintenance costs make some form of closure plan a necessity.

Hmm.  Disney is transforming just about every square inch of Walt Disney World property.  The monorail is old and prone to bouts of unreliable service.  The cost of maintaining the entire system has to be substantial.

Regardless of their denial, could Disney aim their “guns” at WDW’s monorail system in the near or distant future?  What do you think, folks?

Episode 417 – Animal Kingdom Favorite Attractions Poll!

Fun times, if I do have to say so myself.  Hey!  John Peters and I got Doug Davis to rant about the same topic three separate times in the same show!  And, you know, “ranting means ratings”.

Anyway, Doug has himself convinced that Expedition Everest is the absolute worst coaster in The World.  Hmm.  Well, John and I disagree, that’s for sure.  Do you?  The votes spoke loud and clear!

  • Expedition Everest – 62%
  • Big Thunder – 28%
  • Seven Dwarfs – 10%

Yes.  I did omit Hollywood Studios’ Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith.  Frankly, I felt it came up in our conversation as a side-comment.  Would its inclusion have changed the results?  Nope.

A few days ago, I floated an unsubstantiated rumor or speculation … will Space Mountain get demolished within five years of the TRON coaster opening?

What was your verdict?  First, over 80% of you “screamed” that this rumor best be false!  Not a big surprise, at all, I’d say.  What did some of you have to say, though?

“Iconic” seemed to be the word of the day.  However, I was interested to hear this … “Space Mountain is at every park but Shanghai.  It’s a Disney Parks institution … not to be said that those can’t close.

What I would not be surprised at is if Space Mountain closed after the 50th, maybe in 2023, and a complete refurb was done to bring it more in line with the other Space Mountains.”

And, “I don’t think that it will be eliminated as it’s pretty iconic.  That being said, TRON being opened would definitely allow for a long-term refurbishment and/or rebranding without worries regarding attendance.

But, as far as a total destruction?  No.  There’s no chance Disney would do this without having something impossibly amazing to take its place.  Even then, they’d have to deal with a ton of fans that were furious about it.”

Finally, “Personally, I’m not a fan of Space Mountain, so I’d be thrilled at a rebranding.  But, I’d put even that at less than 25% … particularly since there’s been such a massive outcry over a relatively minor change to Pirates.

Disney isn’t stupid.  They realize that Universal is gaining marketshare and that every little bit of bad press or attendee outrage is worth avoiding in the near future.”

What do you think, everyone?  Do those comments sum it all up?  I’d say that they do.  Myself, I can see a massive rebuild on Space’s horizon.  I do not see a full destruction.

UNSUBSTANTIATED Rumor Reaction: Space Mountain!

One of my very favorite All in WDW features is our “Rehabilitate? Or, Eliminate?” series.  Remember, them?  Those are the posts in which I ask you to open up your imagination and determine the fate of a WDW attraction.

I love those re-imagineering “challenges”!  Why?  Simply because of the reaction they elicit from amongst you – our audience.  Your responses pour in with fantastic creativity, but the passion you display in your comments is nothing short of astounding!

Today, I have something a little bit new for you to tackle.  From time to time, I get approached with completely unsubstantiated rumors or speculation.  They cause me to wonder … how would you react to them?

Anyway, let’s see.  Here’s the latest.  I received it this past week, and it goes like this …

‘$50 says Space Mountain gets demolished within five years of the TRON coaster opening.  Reason?  Because why do we need two indoor sci-fi roller coasters directly adjacent?  It makes no sense.’

I definitely, can see some merit.  For example, do we really need two sci-fi coasters in close proximity to each other?  Then, looking a bit further, the mountain does seem to break down a lot.
