Dining Recon: Sanaa’s Indian-style Bread Service!

By Evan Chaisson

Let’s just say that I have been a lifelong Disney fan and had never before experienced Sanaa at Animal Kingdom’s Kidani Village.

In fact, it has taken me seven years to convince my wife to try this restaurant, folks.  We finally did, and the results were amazing!

First impressions?  Theming was outstanding, cleanliness was fantastic, and the service was impeccable!  Enough with the small talk, though, let’s get into the food!

When most people think of Sanaa, the first thing that comes to mind is the restaurant’s outstanding bread service.  All Disney fans know what that means … Indian-style Bread Service!

They do serve five types of bread and they range from those with no heat to some with a little bite.  They are …

  • Traditional Naan
  • Garlic-Ginger Naan
  • Spiced Naan
  • Onion Kucha
  • Paneer Paratha

You can choose one of them or you can pick all five!  We elected to go with one of each.

They also offer tons of dipping sauces … ranging from mild to extremely hot.  We had to sample them all!  They include …

  • Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
  • Mango Chutney
  • Tomato-Date Jam
  • Tamarind Chutney
  • Coriander Chuntey
  • Garlic Pickle
  • Red Chile Sambal
  • Spicy Jalapeño-Lime Pickle

My wife’s response after she enjoyed this feast?  “Why did you wait seven years to take me here?  I love it!  Can we come back”?  Oh, you bet we can!  That’s music to my Mickey ears!

Before & After: Bread Service at Sanaa!

More Animal Kingdom Lodge, Bob?  Sure!  Why not?  Now that we’re stuffed with Boma’s buffet, let’s hop over to Kidani Village!

Let’s see some hands.  Who, out there, adores Sanaa’s infamous bread service?  One, two, three, four …

OK.  I guess that there are a lot of us!  One of the most popular “appetizers” on Disney property, Sanaa’s Indian-style Bread Service is fantastic.

As advertised, you get your choice of five breads – Traditional Naan, Garlic-Ginger Naan, Spiced Naan, Onion Kucha, or Paneer Paratha.

Truthfully, you can pick five of the same, if you’d like.  We usually choose a combination of any of the three naan.

Then, you’re served your choice of three accompaniments.  Actually, for a small up-charge you can order them all.  That’s what we’d recommend you do, In fact!

They are – Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, Mango Chutney, Tomato-Date Jam, Tamarind Chutney, Coriander Chuntey, Garlic Pickle, Red Chile Sambal, or Spicy Jalapeño-Lime Pickle.

So, if you’re a fan, you know all of that already.  What might you not know?  Well, it appears that the presentation has changed somewhat.

Courtesy of one of All in WDW’s readers – Ashley – here’s what she received, shown with Lamb Kefta Sliders, on her visit to Sanaa last week.  Quite a different picture in comparison to the one above, yes?

Closer shot of sliders.

Fortunately, my friends, Ashley reports that, appearances aside, the quality of the service was up to its normal standards.

Boy, that’s a big relief!  This bread is some of the best there is anywhere!  If you get a chance to dine at Sanaa, folks, their bread service is a “must do”.  Trust us.  You won’t be disappointed!

Menu “Recon”: Sanaa Kuamsha Breakfast!

Quoting Disney themselves, “Kuamsha means ‘awakening’ in Swahili, and what better way to ‘awaken’ than with a delicious breakfast at Sanaa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge?

A new casual quick service dining experience is available from 7 to 10 AM, where guests can get made-to-order breakfast while taking in a view of the sweeping savannah.”

Personally, I can’t think of many things better than dining – at any time of the day – with zebras and giraffes strolling by “my” window!

Sanaa Kuamsha Breakfast Now Available at Sanaa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

As you might expect from a restaurant renowned for African cooking with Indian flavors, Sanaa’s Kuamsha breakfast isn’t comprised of everyday Disney fare.

How so?  Well, starting with the popular Boere Breakfast, you’ll see ingredients like Tomato Chutney on the menu.  It’s the very same condiment served the restaurant’s Indian bread service, folks!

You’ll also find components like Boerewors Sausage, Coconut Johnny Cakes, Tanzanian Hash Browns, Chai Whipped Cream, Quinoa, Bobotie Pie, and Kenyan Press-pot Coffee!

Oh, never fear.  There’s standard fare available, as well.  See?  There’s those beloved Mickey Waffles!

For me, I’d have to be adventurous.  My eyes are locked on that Boere Breakfast.  It includes a little bit of everything!  Add some Press-pot Coffee, and I’d be great!

What about you?  Does Sanaa’s Kuamsha Breakfast intrigue you?  Let us know in the poll below!  Then, afterwards, check out the giraffe!

A graceful beast!

The Three “Faces” of Disney’s Butter Chicken!

Hello, folks!  Mrs. All in WDW and I recently got an opportunity to meet a family friend at one of our favorite spots – Sanaa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village.

You know, it’s hard for us to try something “different” when we go to Sanaa.  What I mean by that is, like most Disney fanatics who have eaten at this outstanding restaurant, we just love Sanaa’s bread service.

Their naan is incredibly fresh, hot, and soft.  Their spreads, or accompaniments, are delicious.  We can’t get enough of it.  In fact, we can’t not order it!

Of course, for me, personally, the same goes for Sanaa’s Butter Chicken.  A pretty well-known Indian dish of chicken that is pleasantly drowned in a mildly spiced curry sauce, Butter Chicken tastes phenomenal!

In fact, this dish is so good that Sanaa actually offers two recipes!

First, look to the center section of the restaurant’s menu.  You’ll find a set of options labeled “Potjie Inspired”.  Here, accompanied by rice, you can choose any two main dishes to highlight your meal.

Me?  Well, though all of this section’s entrees look great, I always double-up on Butter Chicken!  Deee-lish!

On this particular visit, Mrs. All in WDW went in a pleasantly different direction.  Under “Spice Route Favorites”, she selected Sanaa’s other Butter Chicken entree!  Way to go, dear!

Served with peas, carrots, rice, shallots, and cucumber, it, too, was very, very good.  In fact, it’s now on my “list” for next time!

Of course, I mentioned that Disney boasts three “faces” of Butter Chicken, now, didn’t I?  How so, you ask?  Well, it just so happens that Sanaa is a pretty inspiring restaurant.  It inspired this 2015 Epcot International Food & Wine dish, at least.

A “abbreviated” but delicious version, to be sure, this particular delight was a festival favorite of mine.  In fact, it earned the #3 spot in my infamous All in WDW Final Top 25!

So, there you have it, my friends.  The Three “Faces” of Disney’s Butter Chicken.  But, wait!  There’s more?!  Yes, folks, there is.  There is one last place at which Butter Chicken hides in Walt Disney World.

To this point, I have walked by the Namaste Cafe food truck in Disney Springs on countless occasions.  Sadly, it has always been before they’ve opened for the day.

They, too, are on my “list”, however.  Why?  Well, they serve Butter Chicken, of course!  One more stop for me to make in the future.  Have they been inspired by Sanaa as well?  I bet they have!

My friends, I have just two words for you … Butter Chicken.  If you find it, you have to try it … even if it’s just once!  It is phenomenal!  And, frankly, I think it’ll leave you wanting more and more!
